Another summer has come and gone, and students have settled into classes once again. As they continue through the year, courses in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) remain essential to a well-rounded education and more importantly a potential career in our industry. As research and development of new technologies and processes become more complex, STEM know-how is increasingly important in so many jobs within our companies that can make our industry – and our member companies – stand out.
ACD is committed to fostering an environment that promotes resources for growth and opportunity for future young leaders to ensure our industry remains competitive in today’s global economy. This is why, in November 2020, the American Chemistry Council (ACC), American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Chemours, and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Week Foundation partnered to establish the Future of STEM Scholars Initiative (FOSSI). ACD joined as a sponsor two years later.
FOSSI is an industry-wide program seeking to increase the number of underrepresented professionals in the STEM workforce by providing $40,000 scholarships over 4-years to students pursuing preferred STEM degrees at HBCUs. FOSSI is dedicated to supporting those STEM scholars who would otherwise not have access to a STEM education by eliminating financial barriers.
Diversity of thought and experience drives us forward, making way for creative solutions to the complex global problems that arise in the chemical distribution industry today and prepares us for the challenges of the future. The FOSSI program helps to fill the STEM workforce gap in the chemical industry. This program not only allows ACD and others to invest in the future of our workforce but also demonstrates the value of the chemical distribution industry among students nationwide.
As of 2024, FOSSI raised over $35 million for nearly 750 scholars and has a 94% student retention rate.
To further the goals listed above, on Monday, October 20, ACD and ACC will host the second annual Swings for STEM charity golf tournament. This event will raise awareness and financial support for FOSSI and will provide contributions for CEFinSTEM, empowering the next generation of STEM leaders participating in both programs. At last year’s inaugural event, over $100,000 was raised with the support of over 20 sponsoring organizations.
If you would like to join this year’s Swings for STEM event as a golfer or sponsor or both, more information, including the registration, can be found here.
