This week, the Alliance for Chemical Distribution (ACD) came together for our most anticipated event of the year: the ACD Annual Meeting. As Chair of the Board, I had a front-row seat to the incredible conversations, connections, and opportunities before us. This year, members of the chemical distribution industry met on Marco Island, Florida, to discuss the lessons that our industry has learned in the past year and explore what we can do to strengthen the future of chemical distribution amid great uncertainty. But, more importantly, it was also a moment to connect and reconnect with each other. Members were given the unique opportunity to discuss emerging industry trends, share expertise, and cultivate their own networks.
Over the course of three days, we gained fresh perspectives, listened to top subject-matter experts, and connected with industry peers. If this year’s programming taught us anything, it’s that together, we can adapt, lead, and succeed.
This year’s theme of “Adapt. Lead. Succeed.” laid the groundwork for how we can approach and navigate everyday uncertainties, whether it’s on a global economic scale or a challenge within the business.
But these words also capture who our industry has always been.
Throughout the decades, our industry has evolved – from regional supply chains to operating in a global economy. Every one of our businesses has had to adapt in one way or another, whether it has been through changing markets, global disruptions, or unexpected challenges. We have all faced difficult times, and our ability to adapt to these changes has shaped who we are and how we operate and respond today.
But we don’t just adapt to changes – we lead through them. Being a leader doesn’t always mean being the biggest and loudest of your peers. Sometimes, leadership is taking a chance on a new way of doing things instead of following the status quo. Sometimes it looks like standing up for employees or customers when the going gets tough. True leadership is about standing tall, taking the shots, and rallying everyone around you to see your vision for the future – that is the true meaning of leadership.
And at the end of the day, success is a key component of our industry. It’s what sets ACD apart and makes us all part of something that is larger than just another trade organization. There’s something special about the way, year after year, we come together to share our hard learned lessons with one another while learning from each other’s losses as much as we learn from one another’s wins. That’s why our success is collective, because we get there together. When one member succeeds, it makes all of us stronger.
This year’s Annual Meeting gave us the opportunity to reflect on how we can shape the future of this industry. And when we adapt and lead with courage and determination, that’s when we truly succeed.
