National Chemistry Week: Adding Spice to Life!

From October 19th to 25th, the Alliance for Chemical Distribution (ACD) will join the American Chemical Society (ACS) and members of the chemical industry to celebrate National Chemistry Week. This week marks the important and essential role that chemistry plays in enhancing our daily lives.

From the chemicals used to treat our drinking water to the fuel for our vehicles, and even the microchips that run our smartphones, chemistry and chemical products are critical to the health, safety, and well-being of our lives. The chemical distribution industry plays an important role in ensuring these products are safely and reliably processed, formulated, repackaged, stored, and transported across the supply chain. While we typically focus on the chemical products that improve our daily lives, this year’s National Chemistry Week asks us to examine the materials that are used to create these everyday products, with the theme “The Hidden Life of Spices.”

Did you know that vanilla can be found in hairspray? Or that curcumin, a compound found in turmeric, has antimicrobial properties? These are just a few examples of the role spices have in adding value to our everyday lives.

Chemistry plays a crucial role in how spices develop their distinct aromas and flavors in cooking. Even a slight change in the compound’s structure can alter the taste or smell profile. The chemicals found in spices also serve as ingredients in the medicines that improve our health and the pigments in dyes that bring color into our lives. When the right – and responsible – chemical processes are applied to a spice, it can completely alter its perception, including its taste, smell, and even appearance.

ACD’s members operate across various sectors, including paint and coatings, cosmetics, food, cleaning products, and many more. Whether it’s adding color to paints and makeup, improving the taste of foods, or even helping disinfectants do their jobs, the spices and the chemistry used contributes to the well-being and convenience of our day-to-day.

This year’s National Chemistry Week puts the spotlight on the spices of our lives and how chemistry enhances what we do and how we do it.

This National Chemistry Week, ACD expresses its appreciation for all members of the chemical distribution supply chain, and their work to safety and responsibly keep the spices in our lives.
